Gallanstown Waterworks Conservation
and Park West Marina Framework Plan
Client:
Dublin City Council
This waterworks at Eight Lock on the
Grand Canal, lies immediately to the east of Dublins
M50 orbital motorway. The waterworks comprise one of the earliest
and most intact examples of covered municipal water supply
treatment. A joint initiative between Dublin City Council
and Waterways Ireland has identified Park West / Gallanstown
as the ideal location to provide essential secure moorings,
thereby facilitating access from the Shannon system through
Dublin to the facility in Ringsend.
The Conservation Report, commissioned
in recognition of the uniqueness of the facility, includes
both the built fabric and the natural environment. The latter
has also emerged as a wetland of in areas, high significance.
The Framework Plan seeks to identify appropriate development
which will maintain the quality of both the historic and the
natural environment.
